Petition for meaningful social dialogue Workers unions in the Czech Republic can provide a necessary avenue for social dialogue with the employer. Unions are often one of the only tools that allow employees to have a say in their work and working conditions. Unfortunately, in the sector of information and communication technology (the ICT sector), we sometimes encounter intimidation and lack of cooperation. We, the workers of the ICT sector, have the right to form workers unions, establish social dialogue, and enter collective bargaining with our employers, in other words - change our working conditions for the better.

Workers deserve the right to decide where they work — whether in the office or remotely. Remote work is not a benefit, but a legitimate form of work. We, the workers of the ICT sector, understand our needs and working styles better than anyone. We believe that: Remote work is not a luxury, but a valid choice for productive, meaningful employment. We should have the right to choose between office work and remote work based on what suits us best.

The ICT sector is a rapidly growing sector that has over the last ten years vastly changed the work scenery in the Czech Republic. A lot of big international companies decided to open centers here and also quite a few Czech companies started and expanded their activities. The salaries they were offering compared to the existing opportunities, appeared attractive which led more and more locals leaping to this promising sector but also a lot of foreigners moving to the Czech Republic in search of better pay and working conditions.

Like all other sectors, the ICT sector is both affected by and contributing to the climate crisis. The climate crisis is starting to affect our working conditions directly and indirectly, and we think it is important to think about what should be happening in our sector to mitigate the impact of ICT on the climate crisis. There is no easy answer to this question. Yet, over the past year, in addition to working conditions, we have focused on it as well.

Stop diminishing the value of our work: Petition for Transparent Communication and Protection of Employee Benefits for ICT Workers We, the workers of the ICT sector, need to address the decline in the value of our work. Despite consistently providing quality products for our employers and clients, we face the rise of non-transparent communication and the erosion of our employee benefits from our employers. This negatively affects our work-life balance and job satisfaction.

Invitation: Introduction to Unions in IT – an open online meeting We are excited to share an invitation to our upcoming online event “Introduction to Unions” organized by the ICT Union. This event is intended for any ICT sector worker interested in learning more about the unions in Czech Republic and their impact on workers’ lives and jobs. Why to join? Knowledge is power. We in the ICT Union believe that every worker should have access to essential information that not only protects their rights but also enhances their job security.

As workers in the sector of IT and communication, we are and will be affected by the changes in and implementation of AI. As a sectoral union in this sector, we believe it is important to talk about these changes and think about how they affect us, our working conditions, and the future of the sector. That is why we are meeting in a pub in Brno, on Tuesday the 8th of August at 7 pm to learn and discuss together.

The IT sector is at the centre of the climate crisis. On one hand, it is largely exacerbating it. On the other hand, it possesses all the means and capacity to change the current course. According to research by the Global e-Sustainability Initiative, the IT sector can enable the reduction of global emissions by up to 20% by 2030. This is not only by optimising the sector from within, but also by contributing to greener solutions in other sectors.

Next union beer meeting will take place next week in the Vegalité in saloon/private room on Tuesday March 28 2023, at 18:00. We will finally meet in Brno for a union beer, get to know each other, and invite new potential members to join the union. Be sure to come even if you don’t have anyone new to bring, but of course the more of us – members or non-members – the better!

After an introduction by two leading experts on the climate crisis and climate justice in the Czech Republic, Anna Kárníková (director of the environmental organization Hnutí DUHA) and Josef Patočka (researcher at the Platform for Social-Ecological Transformation Re-set), we will discuss how the climate crisis and information technology are related.
